How your care works
First aid
Cool the burn under running water for 20 minutes; do not apply ice, butter or toothpaste.
Assessment
Burn depth and area are assessed to plan dressings or surgery.
Treatment
Dressings, skin grafting or reconstruction as needed.
Scar care
Follow-up to limit scarring and restore movement.

Common questions
What should I do immediately after a burn?
Cool it under clean running water for 20 minutes, remove rings and tight clothing, cover loosely with a clean cloth and come in. Do not apply ice or home remedies.
Which burns need hospital care?
Burns larger than the palm, burns on the face, hands, feet or genitals, electrical or chemical burns, and any burn in a child or elderly person.
Can old scars be improved?
Often, yes. Scar release and reconstruction can improve both movement and appearance.
